Keshet is a Hebrew after school immersion and dual language program for Hebrew speaking and non-Hebrew speaking children.  Keshet is the Hebrew word for “rainbow” and it’s also a Hebrew acronym for “Community for Language and Culture” or Kehillat Safa V’ Tarbut.
This program is the first of its kind in NYC. At the core of the program is the exceptional Israeli staff that’s committed to creating a nurturing and Hebrew/Israeli environment for the kids.

Sukkot

Sukkot with Keshet

Keshet (for children ages 3.5 years old and up) meets weekly to teach Hebrew in an immersion set up and a dual language way. Aside of Hebrew we explore aspects of Jewish/Israeli identity, Jewish values and holidays in their uniquely Israeli rendering. This innovative program instills the beauty of Israeli culture and Judaism to students, drawing on music, art, drama, stories and games. Community is not just a part of our name- it is truly central to our identity. Our students and their families take an active part in curriculum-building and in our ongoing programs throughout the year. We aspire to develop in our students a love of Israel’s folklore and its unique history. What unites us is a building and fluency in the beautiful Hebrew language, love of Israeli culture and building a community. Our objective is to raise lifelong learners, motivated by passion and creativity, proud of their Jewish and Israeli heritage and excited to form bonds with other Jewish and Israeli kids.

At keshet we have two tracks: Immersion for kids that speak Hebrew at home and a dual language track for kids who don’t speak Hebrew.

Dual Language track:

At keshet  dual language we use the Chalav u’Dvash curriculum. Chalav u’Dvash is the only program that brings Everyday Hebrew to every child engaging every sense, experiencing everyday Israel, learning everything in Hebrew With professional support every step of the way. Chalav u’Dvash is intended for three to seven year olds who are taking their first steps in Hebrew. Using a variety of developmentally appropriate activities and materials, teaching aids the program creates a fascinating and inviting learning environment which engages all the senses, stimulates the child’s imagination and fosters a love of the Hebrew language.
One of the most unique aspects of Chalav u’Dvash is that it focuses on conversational Hebrew, teaching the language by using it in everyday situations rather than teaching topics or themes. The contents of the program derive from the children’s everyday life and are therefore more likely to become part of the child’s everyday vocabulary. This is how children naturally acquire language. Because the festivals and Bible stories are so rich in possibilities for conversations with young children, we recommend that the Judaic studies be taught in the children’s first language. This allows the teacher to progress according to the children’s pace and not be concerned with covering a certain amount of material by the time a particular holiday comes around. Instructions are provided on how to incorporate holiday vocabulary into Chalav u’Davsh sessions, so that the holiday will also be present in the Hebrew language component of the curriculum.

Immersion track:
At Keshet immersion we use an Israeli curriculum that is being used in Israel for teaching reading and writing. http://www.orianit.edu-negev.gov.il/matiazng/sites/homepage/ilana/
Our goal is to create an Israeli environment for the kids which is filled with Hebrew and Israeli culture. Our immersion track is the only one in NYC.
